The new design tool trend
When I interviewed Buzz Usborne for last week's issue, we talked about HSDS Studio. It's a prototyping tool Help Scout built for themselves. You give it a prompt or a Figma file, and it builds Help Scout screens from their real components.
I've seen a small trend lately. More companies are building their own version:
| • |
Reddit has Proto, built by principal UX engineer Blair Metcalf. Their whole UX and product org uses it, and there are more than 700 prototypes live. |
| • |
Stripe has Protodash. Design manager Owen Williams built it as a side project, and it spread on its own. PMs ended up being some of the most active users. |
Buzz said the design generators kept producing "the same-looking thing again and again. It was just Tailwind."
HSDS Studio runs on their own design system, and now they go from "what if?" to "try this!" in 30 seconds instead of days.

Is your team building one? Hit reply, I'd love to see it.

Don't miss a billable second
Happy Hours captures your day second by second — typing, scrolling, calls, even the pauses. Never what you type, just when. No forgotten entries, no manual accounting: AI categorizes logs into billable time entries by project.

Quotes from his performance reviews
Charles Honig is a product designer in Chicago. From 2021 to 2026 he led design at Microsoft on software for employees: Contracts, Give and Legal Ease. On the side he built Transit Stats, an app for Chicago's CTA riders. He did the front end and back end "with the help of AI tools."
The Contracts case study opens with the result: "30,000 visits a month," and an eight-minute task now takes under 60 seconds. Each Microsoft project also has a quote from his performance reviews. From a principal product designer, on Give: "He is not afraid to speak up and push back when needed."

Simple Sabotage Field Manual, 1944
On 17 January 1944, the Office of Strategic Services issued the Simple Sabotage Field Manual, written for the "citizen-saboteur" in enemy or occupied territory. One section covers organizations and conferences: "Insist on doing everything through 'channels.'" "Hold conferences when there is more critical work to be done." "When possible, refer all matters to committees, for 'further study and consideration.'"
More than 80 years later, the list reads like an ordinary week at work. Now Suzy Canivenc, Marie Ged and Arthur Vinson have updated it for collaborative tools and endless meetings. Bureau Roman Seban designed Manuel de sabotage 2.0, and Fonts In Use says it shows you how to make your organization "even more inefficient than it already is."

Mean
Mean is a free Mac app for visual handoff. You freeze or record your screen and annotate it: a click adds a numbered pin, a drag draws an arrow. Then you hand the session to a person or a coding agent. Agents can use it too, from the terminal or any MCP client, to record the screen and check their own work.
Mean says it's for "anything where pointing beats describing." It needs macOS 15 or later.
