Writing is the most important "secondary" skills for UX designers. In fact, a lot of our time goes into writing things like emails, content, presentations, reports, specifications, UI, and the list goes on.
Today, I'm going to share a tool (Grammarly) that has made me enjoy the process of writing. But first, let me take you on a journey because it hasn't always been like that.
Sometimes, if I have the structure clear in my head, I can jump straight into drafting mode. Other times I can bypass the revision and move straight into editing.
One thing in my process never changes, and that's the editing. I make sure every word counts, and each spelling mistake is eliminated.
Since editing is the last piece of the puzzle, it can be a challenge. You feel drained and just want to be done with it.
It shouldn't be this way. Editing should be fun. Like your piece finally comes together!
For years I told myself I couldn't write, and when I finally forced myself to it, I hired an editor to go over everything to make sure it was good.
It was expensive and not very sustainable in the long run. I even made it an excuse not to write.
Then, a friend of mine recommended a tool that promised to solve the pain of editing (and writing).
At first, I didn't think much about it. But then, in a flash of motivation, I decided to give it a spin.
Holy shit, it turned out to be good. Like, really good! It made my writing so much more enjoyable, and I was actually looking forward to the editing.
Today, over 600K words later, I still use it for all my editing.
Even though my confidence in writing has improved by putting in the hours, I still use Grammarly for all of my content.
English is not my first language (hello from Norway). With Grammarly, I can be 100% confident that my grammar, spelling, and punctuation is on point.
I tend to write very long sentences. They will notify you when this happens and recommend me to break up my sentences (making them a lot easier to read).
Since I'm not a native English speaker (or writer), I have a limited vocabulary. Grammarly helps with alternative word suggestions, which makes my content much more interesting to read.
Each week they send an insight email where they sum up all your writing. A huge motivational boost if you'd like to continue your writing streak!
I'm not saying this will fix all your problems, but it will make your life as a writer a lot easier. If you need a personal editor-like experience (without the enormous costs that go with it), then Grammarly is a tool I can definitely recommend.
And the best part; it's even free to use (although you'll need a pro version to access certain features).
